The global production of natural rubber amounted to 12.2 million tonnes in 2016. The quantity produced in Asia is over 89%.

Africa: development potential for rubber production

With 5% of the world’s production, West Africa offers an ideal development potential for the production of rubber with its favourable climatic conditions, large areas of available land and farm workers.

African rubber, which stands at 0.4 million tonnes, is finding a natural outlet in the European market.

Slight risk of overproduction in view of the production cycle

Rubber tree culture runs on a long term cycle of 40 years, and production starts after an immature period of 7 years.
